With the surge in popularity of social shopping and live auction apps like Whatnot, Mercari, and Poshmark, we’re seeing an increase in “merchandise not received” debit card fraud disputes.
How the scam works:
Members connect with sellers on these platforms but are then encouraged to complete payment outside of the app, often through third-party services like PayPal or Venmo, to “save on fees.” After payment is sent, the merchandise never arrives, and the funds are gone.
What You Need to Know
- Payments made within the app are typically covered by the platform’s buyer protection policies.
- Sending money outside the app removes those protections and limits your ability to dispute the charge.
- Offers to “save fees” by paying directly are often a red flag for fraud.
How to Protect Yourself
- Always complete transactions within the official app or platform.
- Be cautious of sellers who pressure you to move payment elsewhere.
- If a deal sounds too good to be true, it probably is.
